Understand why there is no universal shortest plate for every registration.
Why choose a shorter plate?
A compact plate can give a short registration a more balanced appearance. It reduces spare stock around the lettering rather than changing the registration itself.
What sets the minimum size?
The lettering widths, character spacing, separation between registration groups and margins all contribute. The narrower 1/I glyph can affect a layout too. A character count on its own cannot determine the correct stock width.

How to use a shortest-stock suggestion
- Enter the actual registration, not a sample with the same number of characters.
- Keep the required group layout.
- Compare the available stock with your vehicle measurements.
- Allow space for the selected badge, border and supplier markings.
- Use a larger stock size if it fits the car better.
A compact design still needs the correct lettering envelope. A deliberately misspaced show design is a different intended-use choice.
Can front and rear be different sizes?
You may prefer different stock sizes to suit the two mounting areas. Select each side independently where the builder offers that option, and review both previews before proceeding.
