Import & two-line plate fitment

Get the details right

Separate a smaller recess from eligibility for reduced-size lettering.

Start with the recess

Measure the usable mounting space and note the vehicle’s original market and registration details. A Japanese-style stock shape is a size choice; it does not by itself determine which lettering rules apply.

Check reduced lettering carefully

The MOT guidance describes reduced character dimensions for certain imported vehicles where construction or design cannot accommodate standard plates and the stated conditions are met. It is not a general styling option for every car with an import-shaped recess.

Official reference: DVSA guidance for imported vehicle registration plates. Checked 1 October 2026.

Two-line layouts

Think about both the physical recess and the required registration grouping. A square stock plate still needs a valid layout. Keep the front and rear measurements separate rather than assuming a pair has the same fitment.

What to send for fitment advice

  • Vehicle make, model and original market.
  • Usable recess width and height in millimetres.
  • Existing mounting points and obstructions.
  • The registration format you need to display.
Do not select smaller characters just to make a plate fit.

When eligibility or layout is unclear, confirm it before placing a manufacturing order.
