Private registration or physical plates?

Get the details right

Understand what you are buying and when the new registration can be displayed.

Two separate purchases

A private registration concerns the right to assign a registration number. A physical plate order manufactures the plates displaying a registration you are entitled to use. Buying a made-to-order plate does not buy or transfer the registration number.

Assignment comes first

DVLA uses entitlement or retention evidence for assignment. You cannot use an age identifier to make a vehicle look newer. Follow the official assignment process and fit the new plates at the correct stage; check DVLA’s instructions for your circumstances.

Official reference: GOV.UK private registration assignment. Checked 1 October 2026.

Prepare for the physical plate order

  • Use the exact registration on the relevant documentation.
  • Measure the mounting areas.
  • Decide the finish and whether you need front, rear or both.
  • Prepare supplier identity and entitlement evidence.

Update the connected records

DVLA says to tell your insurer and update automatic payment accounts such as road charging services after changing the registration. Keep confirmation of the change with your vehicle records.

For assignment, retention and renewal questions, use DVLA’s official service. PLATESPEC’s builder is a physical plate design experience.
