The PLATESPEC guidebook

Your complete plate buying checklist

Get the details right

A quick reference from choosing your finish to fitting your plates.

Your first custom plates, without the guesswork.

Perhaps you have just bought a private registration. Perhaps your existing plates are worn, or you want the finishing touch for a car you have spent time getting right. You do not need to understand every plate term before starting. Work through the decisions in a sensible order and check the finished specification before you pay.

First, be clear about what you are buying

A physical number plate and the right to use a registration are different purchases. PLATESPEC's plate options describe the physical product: finish, dimensions, front or rear and the selected construction.

If you are moving to a private registration, complete the relevant assignment steps before displaying it. If you are replacing existing plates with the same registration, make sure your entitlement evidence corresponds to that registration. Resolve any mismatch before production.

Meet the customer: one decision at a time

Example: a fresh pair for a daily driver

You want the car to look tidier, prefer a rounded finish and need front and rear plates. Your useful starting notes are: the exact registration, a gel finish to compare, and the measurements of both mounting areas. You can decide the extras after those foundations are clear.

Now imagine a second customer with a shorter private registration. Their priority is less spare stock around the lettering. They still need to check the front and rear recesses, fixings and layout. A short registration changes the sizing question; it does not remove it.

1. Choose the finish you will enjoy looking at

Compare flat print, rounded gel and defined acrylic edges. For acrylic, look at the offered lettering depths. For a layered gel option, check the exact construction. Use angled and side views when available because a head-on picture can hide the difference in profile.

You can keep the appearance subtle or give the lettering more presence. Neither choice tells you which stock size to order. Use the finish guide and selector to narrow down the surface you prefer.

2. Check front and rear separately

Measure the usable width and height, note the fixing positions and consider the surface shape. Your old plates are a reference, but they may not be the ideal size for the new specification.

If you want shortened stock, check it against the actual registration and mounting area. Think about old screw holes, visible holders and the outline of the recess. A larger option may fit the car better even when a smaller one can accommodate the lettering.

Work through the fitment guide before choosing an unusual size.

3. Choose the extras with a purpose

Decide whether you need a badge, border or fitting accessories, then review their effect on the complete layout and total. A travel identifier should be chosen with the destination in mind. An EV flash needs the appropriate vehicle eligibility.

For mounting, think about what the car already uses. Existing screws, a holder and adhesive pads are different approaches. Confirm suitability and follow instructions for the exact materials rather than treating every plate construction the same way.

4. Get the paperwork ready

For replacement road-use plates, the supplier needs evidence of your identity and address and your entitlement to use the registration. The document guide explains the common combinations and what to check before submitting anything.

A passport can establish your name, but does not by itself provide address evidence. A driving licence may cover both. The registration evidence is a separate requirement. Check the actual documents you have and confirm the supplier's accepted submission method.

Do not upload identity evidence into a demo or send it in an ordinary enquiry. Prepare your documents here and confirm the secure process with the team.

5. Read the specification like a production instruction

Slow down for this step. Check every character, the registration grouping, front and rear selection, finish, stock dimensions, extras and intended use. Review the delivery address and any document requirements too.

The ten-second check that deserves longer

Read the registration from the source document, then compare it with the order. Check each side of the pair independently. If something is unclear, ask before the order moves into manufacturing.

Review the product total and delivery charge separately. PLATESPEC aims for same-day dispatch, but dispatch is not arrival. Confirm the current service and order readiness if you are working to a deadline.

6. Inspect before you fit

When the plates arrive, compare them with the order specification before attaching them to the car. Check the registration, colours, dimensions and finish, and look for any damage. If something is wrong, retain the packaging and contact the team with the order reference.

Plan the fitting method before removing the old pair. Dry-position the new plate, check alignment and follow the mounting-product instructions. Adhesive systems can have temperature, pressure and curing requirements; those instructions matter.

7. Keep the details for support

Keep the order reference and relevant fitting instructions. Clean with products suitable for the materials and inspect the plate and attachment periodically. If a character, surface or mounting develops a problem, describe what has happened and provide photographs where appropriate.

PLATESPEC offers a six-month warranty. Confirm the full coverage and claim terms with the team when ordering; this guide does not replace those terms.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us what you want to improve: “The rear plate looks too wide,” “I want a rounded finish,” or “This is my first private registration.” Include measurements for fitment questions. We can then help with a concrete decision rather than asking you to work everything out alone.
