Road-use plates & show designs

Get the details right

Know which details matter before you choose decorative options.

The road-use essentials

Official guidance requires reflective stock, black characters, white at the front and yellow at the rear, with supplier and British Standard markings. Plates fitted after 1 September 2021 use BS AU 145e and single-shade black characters. Raised characters can be permitted, but the complete plate must comply.

When a design is for display

Decorative text, altered spacing or other non-standard treatments should not be selected for public-road driving. Keep the intended use explicit in your specification and do not assume a style label such as 3D or 4D settles the question.

Why a preview is not certification

The MOT manual checks legibility, correct character form, layout and spacing. Features or fixings that alter how characters appear, including tints or films, can cause a problem. A rendering cannot establish the material performance of a manufactured plate.
